When it comes to the job search process, my clients know that one of my mantras is: “When in doubt, refer to the job posting.” I use this phrase all of the time when people come to me with questions about how to tailor their resume, what to include in their cover letter, or what to emphasize in an interview. I think the job posting contains many of the answers to these common concerns.

But, when talking with a client recently about getting psyched for an interview, we discussed the motivational mantra. She mentioned a Women’s Health magazine piece featuring motivational quotes from female Olympians that inspired her to create her own: “I deserve this!”

I was drawn to check out the article for myself. As someone who practices yoga and enjoys non-competitive athletic activities, I didn’t particularly identify with some of the mantras that focus on pushing yourself to the limit. But, a few that did stand out include:

“‘I am stronger than ever.'”

-Jessica Hardy, current world-record holder in the 50m and 100m breaststroke

“‘Steady, ready, poised, winning.'”

-Arielle Martin, 2011 BMX Supercross World Cup Champion and first-time Olympian

“‘Keep calm and carry on.’ A challenging time is just that—a period in time. Taking a few deep breaths and knowing that it won’t last forever really allows me to focus on the present moment and task at hand.”

-Betsey Armstrong, 2008 water polo Olympic silver medalist and goalkeeper for 2012 U.S. Women’s Olympic Water Polo Team

What’s your motivational mantra? What helps you stay focused or pumps you up?
